Your Spring To Do List

Plant and Transplant

April and May are the best times to plant flowering shrubs, fruit trees, evergreens and most deciduous plant. It’s also time to transplanting existing plants from one spot to another. But if a shrub or perennial is starting their spring growth, move them quickly to their new spot before things heat up.

Prune

The best time to do this is before growth starts in the spring. Educate yourself before you start chopping away - spring-flowering shrubs need to wait until after they finish flowering (mid-season May-July). Spring is a good time to prune roses and ornamental grasses if they look like they need a trim.

Weed

Probably everyone’s least-favorite garden activity, possibly because it feels destructive rather than beneficial, and it can be backbreaking work. Apply a premium pre-emergent application to your planting beds that will save you lots of weeding and money.

Add Color

Spring is planting season. Evaluate your foundation plantings and decide if they need more than a haircut. Plants can outgrow their space and need to be pulled and replaced. Don’t be afraid to take drastic measures.

Flowers are also great for short term but by selecting specimens that have interesting color or texture in their foliage also you will make an impact.
