Why You Should Plant in the Fall

Now that the heat is breaking and the annoying summer bugs are disappearing, it’s time for every homeowner’s favorite fall activity: planting.

Experts suggest several reasons for planting flowers, trees and shrubs in addition to transplanting in the fall, including:

The Soil Is Moist in Cooler Temperatures

Lower fall temperatures reduce plant stress and help contain moisture, allowing plants to take to the new location faster.

The Cooler Temperatures Favor Root Growth

The optimal soil temperature for most plants is around the mid-70s, and our hot Midwestern summer days don’t favor this optimal root growth. By planting in the fall, you give your plants plenty of time to start growing roots before colder weather arrives.

Fall Planting Reduces Transplant Shock

Plants may experience transplant shock when they are taken out of the nursery, removed from their pot and moved to a new spot. By transplanting during mild temperatures, you can relieve some temperature stress.

Fall is the time to plant beautiful spring-blooming plants and flowers. With the cool breeze on your back, take a spade along with your favorite hardy bulbs and plants to add the extra accents you want for your beautiful yard.

Ward + Thornton Landscapes is always available to provide you planning and design consultation along with installation to create the custom and refreshing environment that you can bask in and enjoy. To gather more flower bed ideas, discover our Idea Center.
