Keeping the Grass Mean and Green

What is the picturesque lawn? A lush, deep green grass that is perfectly flat and consistent. What does your grass look like? With the mix of summer storms followed by scorcher days, keeping the lawn looking healthy can be a challenging. Keeping the following tips in mind will help keep your grass impressive.

Water in the Morning

Humans like their coffee in the morning, the grass likes its water. In fact, the best time to water the lawn is in the morning. The grass grows by going through photosynthesis, like all plants. The ingredients needed are ample amounts of water, plenty of oxygen, and absorption of sunlight. If the grass is dry during the day, it will have a harder time producing its nutrients. Also, if you water at night or late in the day, there is an increased chance of fungus growth. Watering in the morning before the hot day will give the water plenty of time to soak into the soil before the day dries it up.

No Walking

Walking is never great for the lawn. When the grass is dry, the blades will lay down, become damaged, and grow irregularly. Also, when the grass is wet, the footsteps will compact the soil, which will limit the amount of water and oxygen to reach the roots. So, when you can, avoid using your grass as a sidewalk.

Sharpen Mower Blades

When your blades are sharp, they slice through the grass easily and cleanly. If the blades are dull, it will shred the grass and damage their ability to grow. So if you can’t remember the last time you sharpened your blades, you may be due for some maintenance.

Keep the Grass Longer

Your grass is under a lot of stress in the summer. The heat and the random droughts makes it difficult for grass to grow and stay healthy. One way to help is to keep the grass longer. There is a rule of thumb when mowing the grass in the summer – the 1/3 rule. You should never be cutting off more than 1/3 of the blade length at a time. Also, keeping the grass at a higher length will prevent weed seeds from reaching the soil.

Dilute the Pet Bathroom

Those pesky brown spots are a hassle. If you are a dog owner, your best friend may be to blame. The urine is very high in nitrogen, which acts the same as over-fertilizing. A great way to battle the brown spots is to water down and dilute the urine so that it won’t have as large of an impact.

With these tips in mind, keep your lawn green and impressive this summer!
