Enough of the White and Gray

Look outside and what do you see. A splendid mix of white, white, gray, more white, more gray… You get the idea. It looks boring out. In the spring time, you have yellows, greens, reds, blues, purple, etc. It’s a visually stimulating time. While you may not think that about this time of year, it can be changed! There are a number or winter-interest plants that can be a breath of life to the often bleak winter. Imagine some color against the white snow or frost, now that will be a beautiful sight!

Lenten Rose

The Lenten Rose isn’t really a rose, but it has a nice rose quartz color, one of the Pantone colors of the year, and is known for its blooming in the winter months. This perennial that blooms in January or February will start to hibernate in the spring, and give the attention to the in season vegetation.

Midwinter Fire Dogwood

This dogwood is bursting with color, that you may have guessed, resembles fire. In the winter months, the stems and area of most growth turn to a warm mix of yellow, orange and red (if only it radiated warmth too). In the summertime, you will see white blooming flowers on top of this shrub along with some purple berries.

Little Giant Dwarf Arborvitae

This is a small evergreen that you can plant into pots and bring some green back to remind you of the spring. They are small, sphere shaped, and will keep its color even through the winter months. That’s why they call it evergreen!

American Cranberrybush

This bush is resilient in the winter. It’s vibrant red berries survive through the frost and will be a nice addition of color against the winter white. They are very easy to transplant, and can be grown in many types of soils. This seems like a perfect addition to your home (and can even double as a privacy barrier).

Choosing some of these additions can easily bring life, color and vibrancy to your winter landscape. The white and gray may be appealing for a short while, but we know we want some excitement to look at!
