A Vegetable Garden. Where Do I Begin?

Vegetable gardens are a feast for the eyes and stomach, but getting started can be tricky depending on your level of experience.

There Are Some Important Things to Remember Before You Begin the Process of Creating Your Own Vegetable Garden:

  • Don’t get overwhelmed: several plants grow well here in Southern Ohio. Lettuce, spinach, chard, kale, squash and pod veggies, like peas and beans, as well as carrots, turnips and tomatoes, for example. Choose just a few to get started.
  • Pick your spot: Most vegetables need 6-8 hours of direct sun. Vegetables thrive in well-drained soil with ample organic matter. And don’t forget a water source.
  • Time to plant: Start your plants from seeds indoors or purchase plants from your garden center.

To Make Your Vegetable Garden Functional and Beautiful:

  • Don’t plant in rows. Group vegetables according to visual characteristics that complement each other.
  • Add a splash of color. Grow edible flowers and serve them on salads or use them to garnish desserts. Edible flowers include lavender, pansy, nasturtium, hibiscus and lilac.
  • Get creative. Try planting in a decorative container to add color and interest to any space, including your deck or patio. People eat with their eyes first, and your family will savor the beauty and taste of your homegrown garden bounty.
