Planting to Attract Birds

If you feed them, they will come. Make your garden into a “field of dreams” for birds, and they will reward you with their songs all year long.

Bird gardens are a delight to the eyes, as well as the ears, because there are so many varieties of plants to choose from.

Trees:

  • Birds love evergreens as they provide shelter during cold, windy winters, and some varieties also offer berries.
  • The Crabapple tree explodes with prolific pink and white blooms in the spring and offers berries in shades of mouthwatering mango and crimson for birds throughout the winter.
  • The Flowering Dogwood is covered in light pink or white blooms in spring, and the leaves change to hues of pink, red and purple in fall. Berries are a favorite for the bluebird.

Shrubs:

  • The Winterberry’s leaves drop away in winter and reveal brilliant tides of scarlet berries that last until spring. Because most plants lose their berries by late winter, this is a lean time for birds, making the Winterberry a welcome treat for them.
  • A wide variety of Viburnums offer lovely, fragrant flowers and stunning fall foliage. The plant’s colorful fruit appeal to birds and other wildlife.
  • Winter King Hawthorn brightens the winter landscape with interesting bark and persistent fruit, attracting birds throughout the year.
Ward + Thornton Landscapes offer services and expert advice for a thriving landscaping project.
